Mahodand Lake sits 35 to 40 km from Kalam at around 2,865 metres, and the round trip by 4x4 jeep costs roughly PKR 12,000 to 15,000 in peak season and takes a full day. There, that is the answer half of you searched for. Stay for the rest though, because the difference between a great Mahodand day and a miserable one usually comes down to three or four small decisions made before breakfast.

Mahodand means “lake of fish”, and for once a tourist-spot name is not exaggerating. Trout actually swim in the cold, clear water. Wildflowers actually cover the meadows in midsummer. The peaks behind the pine forest actually hold snow into July. No attraction in upper Swat pulls more visitors, and if you ask people in Kalam why they came, most of them will say this lake.
How Far Is Mahodand Lake from Kalam?
Roughly 35 to 40 km northeast of Kalam town, up the Ushu Valley. On a map that looks like a forty-minute drive. It is not. The first stretch through Ushu Forest to Matiltan is mostly paved and goes quickly, and then the road simply stops pretending to be a road. What remains is a rocky, narrow jeep track with stream crossings that move around after every rain, and that final section alone can eat more than an hour. Call it two hours each way and you will rarely be wrong.
Plan Mahodand as a full-day trip. Leaving Kalam by 8 or 9 in the morning gives you three to four relaxed hours at the lake and gets you back before the evening chill sets in.
Mahodand Lake Jeep Fare in 2026
Ask three drivers at the stand and you will get three numbers, and all three are opening bids. Here is what the market actually looks like this season.
In July and August, peak season, a private 4x4 for the round trip lands somewhere between PKR 12,000 and 15,000 once the bargaining settles. Come in June or September instead and the same jeep often goes for 7,000 to 9,000. The fare is per jeep, not per head. Fill all five or six seats and suddenly the day trip costs less per person than lunch at a city restaurant.
Two habits save most of the arguments people have with drivers. Agree the total fare, the waiting time at the lake and any stops before you set off, not on the way back. And on summer weekends, book the jeep the evening before through your hotel, because the stands near Kalam Bazaar can empty out by mid morning when the valley is full.
The Road: What the Journey Is Actually Like
Honestly, the drive is half the experience. The track follows the Ushu River the whole way out of Kalam, first through the deodar stands of Ushu Forest, then past Matiltan village, where the waterfall comes into view and, on a clear day, the snow face of Falak Sar behind it, the tallest peak in the area.
Past Matiltan, things get properly rough. Dust, rocks, tight passing points where one jeep reverses to let another through, and a few stream fords. Bumpy, yes. Frightening, no. The local drivers run this track daily all season and read it the way you read your own street. If someone in your group has back trouble, or you are travelling with a baby or elderly parents, just tell the driver to take it slow and add half an hour to the plan.
What to Do at Mahodand Lake
- Boating. Rowing boats work the lake in season. Same rule as the jeeps: settle the price and the time before you get in, not after.
- Trout. Lakeside stalls grill fresh trout to order, and eating it fifty metres from the water it came out of is, for our money, the best meal in upper Swat.
- The walk to Saifullah Lake. Ten to fifteen minutes on foot past Mahodand. Most day-trippers never bother, which is exactly why you should.
- Meadows and photographs. Horses graze the shoreline, wildflowers peak in July, and the morning light on the water is the shot everyone drives up for.
One warning that sounds silly until you are standing there: the wind off that water is cold, even in August. Carry a warm layer. The stalls at the lake sell tea and basic food but there are no real facilities, so bring your own water, snacks and sunscreen too.
Saifullah Lake: The Fifteen-Minute Bonus
Saifullah gets its own section because of how many people drive two hours, photograph Mahodand, eat, and drive home without ever learning there is a second lake fifteen minutes further on. Smaller, quieter, a deeper shade of blue-green, tea stalls by the shore, and a fraction of the crowd. If your legs work and the weather holds, go.
Best Time to Visit Mahodand Lake
Late May to early October is the reliable season. Snow closes the track through winter and usually well into spring, and the early melt can leave the stream crossings running high even after the snow is gone.
The open months each have their own personality. June is green, fresh and still fairly calm. July and August are the postcard months, meadows in full flower, and also the months when every family in Punjab has the same idea at the same time, so expect the crowds and the top-end jeep fares. Then comes September, which the regulars quietly consider the best of the lot: clear light, cooler evenings, thin crowds. We would not argue with them.
Out of season the lake freezes, the meadows vanish under snow and the track simply shuts. And if rain or late snow has just passed through during the season, ask around in the bazaar before committing your day. The drivers know the state of every ford by breakfast, and they will tell you straight.
Getting to Mahodand Lake from Islamabad
There is no direct run, and anyone who tells you to do both in one day has not tried it. Drive Islamabad to Kalam first, 320 to 330 km in 6 to 8 hours via the Swat Motorway, sleep properly, then do Mahodand fresh the next morning.
